Socials without a Target:

Typing the social itself allows you to carry out several dozen built-in social commands.

Example: 
Katya, the delicate elf, types: Smile
Katya sees:  You smile happily.
Others see:  A delicate elf smiles happily.

Socials with a Target:

Typing the social itself + the name of the person you want to perform the social to allows you to carry out several dozen built-in social commands which involve that person.

Example: 
Katya types: Hug Maruk
Katya sees:  You hug Maruk.
Others see:  A delicate elf hugs a swarthy man.
Maruk sees:  A delicate elf hugs you.
